VISIT THE REGION
Our family home, located near pine forests in the hamlet of Lilaire (124 inhabitants), offers you the pleasure of having breakfast in front of our fireplace, and of taking a nap on our covered terrace or under the old plane trees of our large garden (2.5 acres).
We are happy to welcome you in our beautiful home, built around 1850
Settlements : As in LILAIRE, settlements were traditionally scattered about in neighbourhoods distant by about 10 kilometers from the heart of the town. This type of settlement cannot be separated from a special type of spacial development : the "airial", sort of lawn planted with broad-leaved trees (oak, chestnut, fruit trees...) which often demarcated properties which were otherwise open to the free movement of men and animals.
- Family mansions always opened their East façade broadly to the rising sun, and on their West side their roof sloped low down to protect against the bad weather arriving from the ocean.
- If you would like to understand better everyday life in the Landes region, we highly recommend that you spend a day at
the Ecomuseum of the Great "Marquèze" Landes".
After a short ride in a small train from the 19th century, you enter the past...
- Walks in the region : You can walk through the forest to the chapel of Muret built in the 12th century. A little further away are the churches of Mons, an old roman prior church where, according to the legend, Charlemagne's companions were buried, and the old church of Lugo.
- For bird and nature lovers, we recommend the Ornithological Park of the Teich, as well as the domain of Certes. Be sure to ask me to lend you my nature guide books.
- Of course we are very close to Arcachon, the basin which oyster lovers know for its small oyster-farming ports. A boat ride will take you around Bird Island with its huts and its oyster beds, and enable you to discover from the ocean the Dune of Pilat or to go as far as Cap-Ferret...
- If you like bathing, the ocean offers long beaches and waves which delight many surfers. If you have young children, lake Sanguinet, with its fine sand beaches and fresh water, will be safer. You may also want to take a small boat ride from Biscarosse.
- The largest European forest is also close by for you to enjoy walks, but BE CAREFUL, it is vulnerable, and it is strictly forbidden to smoke on its paths because each summer many acres of land are destroyed by devastating fires. You should also know that 92% of this forest is private property belonging to people who love it and take care of it for future generations.
- See you soon …. Catherine and Daniel.
